Who Needs this License & Bond?

An Oregon Contractor – Residential Specialty License is required for contractors who intend to perform:

  • One or two unrelated building trades for residential or small commercial projects, such as a plumber-electrician or a framing-roofing contractor. These contractors can manage and supervise work within their licensed trades and can subcontract out additional trades not covered by their license.
  • Projects on single properties involving three or more unrelated building trades, as long as the contract for labor and materials does not exceed $2,500. This allows handyman-type services to handle smaller, multi-trade projects without needing a broader license.

Here are some examples of when you would need a Residential Specialty License:

  • You are a plumber who also wants to do electrical work on residential projects.
  • You are a carpenter who wants to add roofing services to your business.
  • You are a handyman who wants to be able to take on small jobs involving multiple trades, like kitchen remodels or bathroom updates.

However, you would not need a Residential Specialty License if:

  • You only work on one specific trade, like plumbing or electrical work.
  • You work on larger projects that involve multiple trades and exceed the $2,500 limit for single properties.
  • You are a subcontractor working under the supervision of a licensed contractor who covers the necessary trades.
