The Washington Vehicle Ownership Bond is required by the Wahsingon State Department of Licensing. The bond does not protect you; it protects the DMV from you in case someone with the title claims that the vehicle is theirs.

Who needs a Vehicle Ownership Bond?Washington Defective Title Bond

When the Department is not satisfied as to the ownership of the vehicle, as a condition of issuing a Title, they may require the applicant to file a Vehicle Ownership bond. With this bond, you are making it known that you are the only owner and that you acquired the vehicle legally. You will be issued a Bonded Title. This is essentially a title based on the value of the vehicle when the original proof of ownership has been lost or damaged and cannot be reproduced.

What is the bond amount?

The bond amount must be equal to one and one-half (1-1/2) times the value of the vehicle determined by the Department of Licensing. If you are unsure of the amount call the Department to find out. Surety companies cannot provide this amount for you. Please note you cannot fully complete our application and we cannot write your bond until a bond amount is established.
