Here are the requirements to obtain a Pennsylvania Private Detective License:

  • Age: Applicants must be at least 25 years old.

  • Citizenship: Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

  • Criminal Record: Applicants must have a clean criminal record, free from any convictions related to fraud, theft, or other illegal activities.

  • Education: Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience: Applicants must have at least three years of experience in one of the following roles:

    • Detective agency employee

    • Law enforcement agent with a rank higher than patrolman

    • Watchman or guard with a record of responsible and reliable service

  • Examination: Applicants must pass a comprehensive written examination administered by the Pennsylvania State Police, which assesses their knowledge of Pennsylvania laws, investigative techniques, and ethical conduct.

  • Oral Interview: Applicants must undergo an oral interview conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police to evaluate their communication skills, interpersonal abilities, and overall suitability for private detective work.
