The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI) requires a license for servicing student loans, regardless of where the entity is located. To obtain this license, one must provide a New Jersey Student Loan Servicer Bond in the amount of $30,000. The cost of the surety bond is usually between 1% and 3% of the bond amount, subject to a minimum premium and fees of $150 to$250. Surety1 will shop its many markets to procure the right price at the right terms. While the license is required by the DOBI, it is administered by the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) and the required surety bond is filed electronically with the NMLS.
