The Minnesota Ownership and Security Interest Surety Bond is required by the Department of Public Safety, Division of Motor Vehicles. The bond protects the State and any prior or subsequent purchaser of the vehicle against loss or damage by issuance of the Minnesota Certificate of Title to the bondholder.
Who needs an Ownership and Security Interest Surety Bond?
The State may require you to obtain the bond, to secure a Certificate of Title, when the vehicle cannot be titled or registered because you don’t have the required title documents.
After you submit the Application to Title & Register a Vehicle, the DVS will notify you if you need the bond. In addition, submit an Affidavit to Correct the Ownership Record of a Motor Vehicle.
What is the bond amount?
Surety companies cannot provide this amount for you. Please note you cannot fully complete our application and we cannot write your bond until a bond amount is established.
The State of Minnesota requires an amount equal to one and one-half the value of the vehicle, as determined by the Registra. There is a three year term to the bond.
