In general, contractor licensing in the State of Illinois is issued per city or county. You will need to check with your counties local Contractor’s government division for the specific amount you will need to be bonded for. This will need to be submitted in order to be given a license as a general contractor. For more information please visit the Contractor Unified License and Permit Bond Act.

The Act defines a contractor as any person who in any capacity other than as the employee of another for wages as the sole compensation undertakes to construct, alter, repair, move, wreck, or demolish any fixture or structure. The term includes a subcontractor or specialty contractor but does not include a person who furnishes only materials or supplies.

What is the purpose of the Illinois Unified License and Permit Bond?

A Unified License and Permit Bond is a single bond, combining both a license bond and a permit bond, issued on a uniform document. This is prescribed by the county board, or board of county commissioners that includes the following:

  • the amount of the unified bond
  • the time period covered by the unified bond
