The California Vehicle Verifier Surety Bond is required by the California Department of Motor Vehicles in order to obtain a Vehicle Verifier License in this state.
What are the requirements to be a Vehicle Verifier in California?
The State of California defines a vehicle verifier as any person who inspects, records, documents and submits to the Department of Motor Vehicles, or its authorized representative, such proof of identification as may be required by the department for the purpose of registering or transferring the ownership of vehicles.
To obtain a license as a vehicle verifier in California, the following must be submitted to the DMV Occupational Licensing Unit:
- An application for a Vehicle Verifier’s Permit
- A California Vehicle Verifier Bond in the amount of $5,000
- An application for Occupational License Personal History Questionnaire, Part B, Individual Licensing Unit
- A request for Live Scan Clearance (receipt)
- A $50 Non-refundable application fee
- A $1 Family Support Program fee
More information about the application requirements and processes can be found on the CA DMV website.
What is the purpose of the Surety Bond?
This bond is in place to protect the State and People of California. It essentially ensures that the company won’t cause any loss to the State of California from the Vehicle Verifier permit and won’t cause any loss to any person as a result of the parricidal incorrectly verifying an engine, vehicle verification number, or hull identification number.
If a client suffers a loss from malpractice of the vehicle verifier, they can make a claim on their California Vehicle Verifier Surety Bond which the surety company will pay out if settled. Unlike insurance, the bond principal (the vehicle verifier in this case) must repay the surety company for any losses incurred from the claim. See our “What is a Surety Bond” Video.
