The California Alcoholic Beverage Tax Bond is required by the California Department of Revenue.
The alcoholic beverage tax is an excise tax collected on the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in California. Imports of alcoholic beverages are also subject to this tax. The Alcoholic Beverage Tax Bond guarantees the taxes are paid. The tax is administered by the California Board of Equalization .
This bond is not the same as a license. You must have a license before you can get this bond. The Board of Equalization requires that one of the following licenses be issued by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC):
- Manufacturer
- Winegrower and direct wine shippers
- Wine blender
- Craft distiller
- Distilled spirits manufacturer’s agent
- Rectifier
- Wholesaler
- Importer
- Customs Broker
- On-sale general brew pub
After you get a license, you can register with the Board of Equalization. Once registered you will have to provide the Alcoholic Beverage Tax Bond. If the surety suffers a loss, the bond principal (entity or person who buys the bond) will be expected to pay the surety back.
